Ooh, it's big...

The Tokyo Sky Tree is the World's tallest free standing tower, at 634 meters to its tip. It opened to the public on May 22nd. The highest elevation visitors can reach, is 450 meters, which seemed so high that it felt more like I was riding a helicopter, than standing in a tower.

We didn't go there because we are the touristy kind, but because it seemed like a fun thing to do for the annual gathering of friends from all over Japan. And I must honestly say, that if I didn't go then, I probably would never go. (well, maybe not "never," but...)

Anyway, it was great fun, and we had a blast.

Under a perfect blue sky

The Iimori family lived in the Okaido shelter, which is where most of my time in Ishinomaki was spent. We had an operation to cook there, and I had been put in charge of it two days after I first arrived in Ishinomaki.

I first became friends with the boy, Yosshi (nickname), who surprised me by quickly memorizing my name before we had made any real communication. Eventually I became close with the parents, who had been given the job of resident leaders within the shelter.

We stayed in touch, even after they closed the shelter, and I visited them in their temporary house in January. Last month, I got a call from the Mother who said: "Hey, I heard you're having an exhibition in Sendai, why didn't you tell us? We wanna go check it out!"

I was a little hesitant to tell them about the show, because I didn't know how they would react to photographs that reminded them of the Tsunami and their time in the shelter. Needless to say, I was relieved and happy to get that call and we set a date to go to the show together.

We spent the whole day together, and it was a strange and wonderful feeling just watching the kids chase pigeons under a peaceful, beautiful blue sky.
